Eduard Bass, translated by Ruby Hobling

The Chattertooth Eleven

A classic short story by Eduard Bass from 1922, now in an English translation. The author of this still current translation, notable for its creative and playful approach to Bass' language as well as faithfulness to the style of the original as well as the times when it was written is Ruby Hobling, with an introduction by Mark Corner.
One of the most famous works of Czech prose tells the story of Chattertooth, who raises his eleven sons to become a fenomenal football team. We can understand it as a celebration of the fair-play maindset, tenacity and excitement for sports, as well as a period piece slightly mocking the excitement for Czech football and alluding to events in the post-war society. It is not an accident that the book has found a great popularity with young and old readers alike, being published over thirty times and made into a move as early as 1938.
